Inlay Venetian Plaster

Learning specialty faux finishes from a veteran artist with over 25 years of experience.

I have been creating custom faux finishes and murals since 1998 and I'm here to give away some of the trade secrets.  You can see a lot of the finishes I've created at www.PortlandMurals.com

Today we will be looking at a finish that I created utilizing gold paint, Venetian plaster and vinyl used for masking.  So to start off you need a completely flat wall.  There are very few finishes I create that doesn't require a smooth wall.

Process

I always prime the wall with oil primer anytime I am using vinyl that will be removed.  After that I apply 2-3 coats of Modern Masters Gold with a thread roller (metallic paint roller) .  That has to dry for at least a day before you move onto the next step of applying the vinyl.  I measure the wall and bring those measurements into Adobe Illustrator.  I create the design to fit the space exactly and then cut it out with my Graphtec vinyl cutter.   If you don't own a vinyl cutter you can also go to your local sign shop and have them cut it out of vinyl for you.  I then apply that vinyl on top of the gold paint.   You will need to prime the wall again with a quartz primer so that the plaster will have something to hold on to and let that dry for a couple of hours.  Now you can begin to apply the Marmorino KS Venetian Plaster.  The plaster should be applied with a trowel and it shouldn't be much thicker than the vinyl itself.  The next day we can apply the final coat.  Pull the plaster tight across the service and cover everything.  Before the plaster dries remove the vinyl to reveal the pattern in gold.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask below and I will try to answer it for you.

Thanks
